BBC reports that Dr. Sabeel Ahmed has been remanded in custody until August 13, 2007. This same report indicates that "Dr. Sabeel Ahmed holds no tenancy agreement for his home in Ramilies Road, Liverpool, and has not applied to extend his working visa, the court also heard."
-- July 14, 2007: Dr. Mohammed Haneef charged by Australian police with providing "reckless support" to a terrorist organization. On July 16, an Brisbane, Australia magistrate released Dr. Mohammed Haneef on bail. The Australian reports that "federal prosecutors failed to convince a magistrate the Indian-born man was too dangerous to release." However, the Australian federal government then used immigration laws to keep Dr. Mohammed Haneef under detention. The Australian reported that Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews revoked Dr. Haneef's visa, and "citing 'national interest, national security' - said it was not appropriate for him to 'move freely in the community'. " Australian news media report that Dr. Haneef's lawyer would appeal this visa cancellation. On July 12, BBC reported that bureaucratic wrangling between India and Australia was hampering the inquiry into Dr. Mohammed Haneef.

UK Car Bomb Suspects Released Without Charge:
-- July 15, 2007 - two Paisley medical workers. BBC reports two car bomb suspects released: "Two men arrested in connection with the failed car bomb attacks in Glasgow and London in June have been released without charge. The men, aged 28 and 25, had been arrested by Strathclyde Police at the residences of the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley on 2 July."
-- July 13, 2007 - Marwa Asha. BBC reports that Marwa Asha, wife of Dr. Mohammed Asha, was released without charge

UK Car Bomb Suspects Still Being Questioned:
-- Dr. Mohammed Asha arrested June 30, 2007. BBC states that he "remains in custody at Paddington Green police station." London Times reports that "[p]olice have been given until July 21 to continue questioning".
-- Engineer Kafeel Ahmed remains hospitalized under police guard

UK Hospital Security Must Be Tightened.
Daily Telegraph and Sky News reported on the poor security in British NHS hospitals. The Daily Telegraph stated that "Poor security in hospitals could give terrorists working in the NHS easy access to deadly chemicals and viruses, an expert warned yesterday. Hospitals are 'just as vulnerable as any nightclub', a security management specialist based in a London hospital told the Health Service Journal." Sky News reported that security management specialist stated "Most hospitals give staff cards that let them into certain areas, but it's easy to lend someone your pass...That could give them access to X-ray machines, isotopes, chemicals and disease slides. It could be days before anyone realised a virus was missing.' "

UK Security Minister: UK monitoring 30 terror cells, 2000 suspects.
Australian News reported that UK Security Minister Alan West told BBC radio that "Britain's security services believe up to 30 Islamist militant cells are plotting attacks and they are monitoring 2000 suspects and another 2000 sympathisers". Security Minister West was reported as saying: "There are 30 that are actually being looked at very closely indeed because they have got to the stage where they are gathering materials and doing things which could lead in fairly short term to doing something if they wanted to. This means that effectively about 2000 individuals are being monitored in varying degrees of closeness and probably about another 2000 loosely connected to them. The scale of this whole thing is quite dramatic."

UK Missile Plans Terrorist Found Guilty
On July 13, the Khaleej Times reported that "Yassin Nassari, 28, was found guilty of possessing documents likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism...[t]he charges related to computer files on the hard drive of Nassari’s computer -- including plans for building a missile". Yassin Nassari's wife was found not guilty of of failing to disclose information to police. Khaleej Times reports "[a]mong the evidence produced in court was a letter written by El-Hor to Nassari in which she wrote she was proud of him and happy that Allah had granted him the chance to be a shaheed (martyr) in the cause of jihad, or holy war."

July 3 news roundup of UK terror plot investigation activities:

-- Terror Attacks: 'All Key Suspects Held'. Sky News reports "Police investigating the failed terror attacks on London and Glasgow believe they now have their key suspects in custody. But they stress their inquiries are far from over and say Britain is likely to remain on a critical level of terror alert for some time."

-- 'Same Men Behind Attacks'. Sky News is reporting that sources say the same men were behind both the London and Glasgow attacks. In addition, Sky News is reporting the name of the second Jihadist arrested in Glasgow as "Dr Khalid Ahmed". Sky News is also stating now that that destination of the Australian doctor fleeing Australia when he was arrested - was headed to Pakistan.

-- Two Additional Arrests in Blackburn (northwest UK). Sky News reports that "Two men have been arrested on suspicion of terror offences after they apparently tried to collect a delivery of large gas canisters at an industrial estate in Blackburn."

-- CBS News reports this morning that "Intelligence sources tell CBS News that the people behind the attempts were directly recruited by Abu Hamza al-Muhajir," the leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq. See Evan Kohlmann's May 1 post on al-Muhajir and see other CT Blog posts on him.

-- Seven Doctors Held in UK Terror Plot. The Daily Telegraph is reporting that, of the total of 8 suspects currently arrested, "Seven doctors held over al-Qa'eda bomb plot" and that "five of the seven suspects held by British police are young Middle Eastern men employed at British hospitals". This includes a Dr. Mohammed Asha from Jordan, and Dr. Bilal Abdulla from Iraq. The Daily Mail is also reporting that two of the doctors are Saudi. An increasing focus is on suspects employed at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, Paisley, Renfrewshire. Sky News has provided a brief summary of the 8 suspects arrested thus far. Daily Telegraph has provided a high level timeline of the Jihadist car bomb efforts.

-- Doctor at Arabic Websites at Work. Daily Mail reports that Jihadist suspect Dr. Bilal Abdulla "repeatedly visited Arabic websites when he was supposed to be working and was about to be disciplined for it, said staff at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Glasgow." Apparently, co-workers were aware of this and unwilling to report suspicious behavior.

-- Glasgow Bomber Abdulla Traced to Taxi Call. Sky News reports that a Paisley taxi cab company was visited by the police seeking information on Glasgow bomber Dr. Bilal Abdulla, seeking information on his whereabouts - just minutes before the Glasgow attack.

-- NHS staff among terror suspects". The Daily Mail is reporting that "up to 12 members of Al Qaeda were sent to work in the NHS", and provides a list of the terror suspects connected with the UK National Health Service. BBC News has also now come out with a report on this, stating that of the 8 arrested, all have links with the NHS, and that "seven are believed to be doctors or medical students, while one formerly worked as a laboratory technician." The Daily Mail reports of "NHS and an open door to terrorism -- 6,000 Arab doctors at work in UK."

-- Doctors Arrested in Australia. BBC reports that "Indian national Dr Mohammed Haneef" was arrested in Australia, and that a second doctor is also being questioned in Australia. Neither doctor has yet been charged. Sky News reports that Dr. Haneef "was based in Liverpool before moving to Australia". The London Times reports that Dr. Haneef was "trying to board a plane to leave the country with a one-way ticket." News media have differing reports as to the planned destination. Australian news is reporting the destination as Singapore; Sky News is reporting that the planned destination was to Pakistan.

-- Prison Connection to Bombers? The London Times is reporting over concerns that the British Jihadists have been getting plans and information to carry out the bombing atacks from Dhiren Barot or other arrested Jihadists.

-- Security Crackdown in London and Glasgow. Daily Telegraph reports that the security crackdown in London and Glasgow has included putting 6,000 armed police on the streets.

-- Scotland Police Carry Out Controlled Explosion of Car Near Mosque. AP and Sky News are reporting that a "controlled explosion was carried out early Tuesday morning on a suspicious car parked outside the Forth Street Mosque in Glasgow".

-- Security Alert at Heathrow Airport and other controlled explosions. ITN News is reporting that "Heathrow Airport's Terminal Four has been evacuated after police received reports of a suspect package" and that other controlled explosions of suspicious packages are happening in the Hammersmith area of London and the city's financial district. Daily Mail reports that over 100 flights were canceled at Heathrow airport, and that Britain is in "lockdown mode" with extra security "in place at airports, train stations, on the Tube, at major sporting events and shopping centers".

The following is a report by UK's Channel 4 on a survey of British Muslims regarding the July 2005 bombings.  Clearly there is a significant percentage that not only does not believe that British Muslims are responsible for those bombings, but also believes that the UK government concocted these as a ploy to suppress British Muslims:

A quarter of Muslims polled think the authorities involved with staging the 7/7 London bombings.

It's a worrying picture that suggests a significant minority of British Muslims are alienated from the government and the security services.

A Channel 4 News survey of 500 British Muslims, carried out by GFK NOP, has found that nearly a quarter don't believe the four men identified as the London bombers were responsible for the attacks.

And a similar number say the government or the security services were involved. Nearly six in ten of those polled believe the government hasn't told the whole truth about the July the 7th bombings - and more than half say the intelligence services have made up evidence to convict terrorist suspects.

The findings come as Tony Blair told a London conference that the "true voice of Islam" needed to be heard - to isolate the extremists.

The Prime Minister went on to say that that most Muslims wanted to be "loyal citizens", despite the "disproportionate" public attention given to what he called "small, unrepresentative groups" of radicals. In this exclusive report,

The Survey

Channel 4 News, with GFK NOP, has commissioned a survey to reveal the Muslim community's attitudes towards the 'official narrative' surrounding the 7/7 bombings revealing that: 59% of the 500 people polled believe that the government has not told the public the whole truth about the 7th July bombings.

52% believe that the British security services have "made up" evidence to convict terrorist suspects.

24% believe the four men identified as the July 7th bombers were not actually responsible for the attacks.

68% believe that the Muslim community does not bear any responsibility for the emergence of extremists willing to attack UK targets. Although 58% felt that the community should be doing more.
